Childhood methanol ingestion treated with fomepizole and hemodialysis.

Fomepizole (4-methylpyrazole; Antizol) is used increasingly in the treatment of methanol toxicity in adults. Little experience exists with this drug in the pediatric population, however. We present a case of methanol poisoning in a child in whom the use of fomepizole averted intravenous ethanol infusion and the attendant side effects of this therapy.

The Role of Hemodialysis and Fomepizole in Ethylene Glycol Intoxication

Ethylene glycol is one of the most common toxic alcohol ingestions requiring hemodialysis for treatment. With the FDA approval in 1997 of fomepizole (4-methylpyrazole), the indications for hemodialysis in addition to fomepizole for ethylene glycol poisoning have been examined in recent articles and case reports. Fomepizole, a competitive inhibitor of alcohol dehydrogenase, binds to the same sit...

Outcomes of Severe Methanol Intoxication Treated with Hemodialysis: Report of Seven Cases and Review of Literature.

To identify factors associated with the outcome of severe methanol intoxication treated with hemodialysis, we analyzed the clinical course of 7 patients admitted with serum methanol level higher than 50 mg/dL, and therefore requiring hemodialysis. Four patients (group A) had adverse outcomes (1 death, 3 severe neurological deficits and/or blindness) and 3 patients (group B) had no adverse outco...

Accidental methanol ingestion: Case report

BACKGROUND The incidence of methanol (CH3OH) intoxication differs enormously from country to country. Methanol intoxication is extremely rare in the Dutch population. Even a low dose can already be potentially lethal. Patients are conventionally treated with hemodialysis. Therefore we'd like to present a report of a foreign sailor in Rotterdam who accidentally caused himself severe methanol int...
